Judge issues temporary stay against new Utah immigration law

Until the hearing on July 14

May 10, 2011
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah law letting police check the citizenship status of anyone they arrest is set to take effect despite a lawsuit aimed at stopping it.

A hearing is set Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City on a request for an injunction against the law modeled on a controversial measure in Arizona.

American Civil Liberties Union of Utah executive director Karen McCreary says the Utah law should be postponed at least until after the hearing.

The Utah Legislature approved a requirement for police to verify a person's U.S. immigration status if they are arrested for a serious crime.

An immigration check is optional for lesser crimes.

Other laws effective Tuesday allow people to sponsor immigrants by accepting financial responsibility and hire temporary workers from a Mexican state.
